How to Make Homemade Ghee

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds organic unsalted butter (grass fed is best)

Instructions

  1. Unwrap butter and place into a medium saucepan.
  2. Heat the butter over medium heat until completely melted on medium head.
  3. Cook for about 20-25 minutes, or until the butter foams and boils twice.
  4. When the second foam occurs, the ghee is done.
  5. At this point, the butter will be separated into bright gold/light brown melted oil, foam, and crunchy milk solids.
  6. Pour through a wire mesh strainer lined with 4-6 layers of cheesecloth into a mason or other glass storage jar with a lid, removing all but the clarified butter, or ghee.
  7. DON’T STORE IN PLASTIC, especially since the ghee will be very hot. Discard the foam and crunchy milk solids and store in the fridge for up to 3 months.
  8. Use ghee for any recipes you’d typically use butter, especially for cooking at higher temperatures as it does not burn the way butter can.
